The Theme: The Human Architecture

Laws, economic policies, and civic frameworks are not abstract theories: they are the invisible blueprints that dictate how we move, survive, and build community. For our inaugural issue, we invite writers to explore "The Human Architecture." We are seeking work that interrogates the artificial structures built around us. Who designs our societal realities, and what does it feel like to live inside those blueprints?

We welcome pieces that examine the human cost of civic planning, the structural constraints of legal precedents, the emotional weight of socio-economic divides, or the resilience of communities reclaiming space within rigid institutional systems. Show us the human hands behind the policy, and the human lives living within the architecture.

Submission Guidelines & Breakdown

We accept submissions from high school and undergraduate writers globally (ages 14–22). Please ensure your submission falls under one of our three core categories:​

• Current Events Response (600–1,000 words): A short, sharp response to a news article, court ruling, policy announcement, or public debate from the past 6 months. We want your gut reaction sharpened into argument: what does this piece of news reveal about the architecture we're all living inside? Include a link or full citation to the article/event you're responding to at the top of your document (this will be removed before blind review).

• Narrative Poetry: Submit up to 3 poems (maximum 50 lines per poem) in a single document. We look for verse that translates macro socio-political realities into micro, intimate human experiences.

• Civic Prose & Essays: (800–1,500 words) Analytical or narrative non-fiction that tackles structural critique, political philosophy, or legal policy with sharp rhetoric and compelling storytelling.

• Cultural Reviews: (600–1,200 words) Critical examinations of contemporary media, public rhetoric, art, or literature, dissecting how these cultural artifacts reflect or challenge existing policy.

Formatting Requirements: All submissions must be uploaded as a single .pdf, .doc, or .docx file, formatted in 12pt Times New Roman font and double-spaced. To ensure a completely unbiased selection process, Undercurrents Review utilizes a strict blind-review system.
